Competition Analysis

Filled under: ,

How to conduct a Web site competitive analysis

Whether you are redesigning your website, or designing a new website, it is important to understand who you are going to be competing against. When the search engine returns the top results, you will need to differentiate your website from the competition. The best way to do this to conduct web competition analysis.

What to look for

There are number of ways of identifying your online competition. Depending on who carries out the analysis (or research) will influence what is looked at. It is important to get a rounded view on your competition so that all areas are looked at. This can include;

* Marketing

What messages are your competitors sending? What graphics and imagery are your competitors using? How are the pages presented to the user?

* Search engine optimisation

How many links do your competitors have? Where are the links coming from? How many pages of content are there?

* Website accessibility

How are the pages developed? What techniques have been used to make the web pages accessible? What colours are used on the page and are there any possible issues?

* Functionality

What features do your competitors websites have which are useful? How could these features be improved or refined?

* Content

How are the web pages put together? How is the navigation structured and labelled? Is it clear to the user how to navigate around the pages?

First things first

The first thing to realize is that a Web site competitive analysis is usually performed for a team of business specialists who know nothing about design, usability, or information architecture. They don’t have a clue about labeling systems, search ergonomics, or affordance. All they want to know is what the competition is doing and how they can do it better. Obviously, your expertise is in usability and user experience design, so you’ll be evaluating sites along the lines of your domain expertise, but the data you gather must always point toward making a smart business decision.

Next we’ll discuss who and what you’ll be analyzing.

Who’s the competition?

It’s very likely that you’ll be given a list of competitors. Every company that has a handle on their market space knows who the competition is.

What to analyze

Now that you have a list of competitors, you need to draw up a list of items to analyze when you visit their sites. I’ve developed a categorized list of items over the years, which are included below:

* Home page. How informative is the home page? Does it set the proper context for visitors? Is it just an annoying splash page with multimedia? How fast does it load?
* Navigation. Is the global navigation consistent from page to page? Do major sections have local navigation? Is it consistent?
* Site organization. Is the site organization intuitive and easy to understand?
* Links and labels. Are labels on section headers and content groupings easy to understand? Are links easy to distinguish from each other? Or are they ambiguous and uninformative (“click here” or “white paper”)? Are links spread out in documents, or gathered conveniently in sidebars or other groupings?
* Search and search results. Is the search engine easy to use? Are there basic and advanced search functions? What about search results? Are they organized and easy to understand? Do they give relevance weightings or provide context? Do the search results remind you what you searched for?
* Readability. Is the font easy to read? Are line lengths acceptable? Is the site easy to scan, with chunked information, or is it just solid blocks of text?
* Performance. Overall, do pages load slowly or quickly? Are graphics and applications like search and multimedia presentations optimized for easy Web viewing?
* Content. Is their sufficient depth and breadth of content offerings? Does the content seem to match the mission of the organization and the needs of the audience? Is the site developing its own content or syndicating other sources? Is there a good mix of in-depth material (detailed case studies, articles, and white papers) versus superficial content (press releases, marketing copy)?

A good competitive analysis not only produces usability metrics but also aids decision makers in their strategic goal-setting and planning.

Content Writing in SEO

Are you puzzled with the question… what is content writing? Well, then it is all about writing for Internet and designing Learning modules. Content writing is as tolling as the world of Internet.

Well, the real splurge to Content writing came with the emergence of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and the innate desire for every website to be ranked higher and higher over the Internet. You’d know more on SEO in later chapters. Mobiles, Computers, Laptops, Notebooks, Medicines, Pharmaceuticals, etc. there are websites for every domain running over Internet, and there’s content for everything. The companies who are either directly or indirectly engaged in SEO optimization need content to drive the hungry Google as well as many other popular search engines. It is content which rules rather than SEO or Bots.

Whether it is world of SEO marketing, or SEO optimization in general, the role of content will always remain there, and no technology can ever challenge the role. No matter what technology comes in, or what technology goes out of frame, content will rule. Therefore, the very significance of content cannot be undermined anyways. Either it is launch of small product, or increasing the online visibility of present line of products, there’s always need of SEO to start the things in a professional way. Here again, you just cannot underestimate the role of content. The strategy of Internet marketing itself begins from content and ultimately it leads to content. The whole story swivels around content.

If we have talked of the very importance of content for SEO optimization, then it becomes important to mention straight away that only quality content will do the quality work. If the quality of content is not good, simply forget about the possibilities of increasing your on-line business prospects. You would never ever be having good business prospects.

Another important significance of having crispy content by your side is that you will be able to impress Google SEO engine. A fresh and crispy content is liked by smart Google crawlers and they will crawl on your content. If your content is not good or it has flaws, then the Google SEO crawlers will not come to your content, and as the result you will be in total shams.

The gist is that SEO optimization doesn’t works if you are not having good and quality content. Make sure that you hire an experienced content writer to do the job.

Your SEO Checklist: 4 Steps to Optimizing Your Website

The goal of search engine optimization is to have the search engine spiders not only find your site and pages but also specifically rank the page relevance so that it appears at the top of the search engine results. The process of optimization is not a one-time process but requires maintenance, tuning, and continuous testing and monitoring.
Below is a broad four-step process for a strategy for search engine optimization. Use this as your top-level checklist.

Step 1: Target Market Business Analysis
  • Website analysis. Analysis of meta sets/keywords, visible text and code to determine how well you're positioned for search engines. For example, how much code do you have on a page compared to text?

  • Competitive analysis. Examination of content keywords and present engine rankings of competitive websites to determine an effective engine positioning strategy. Pick the top five results in the Google listing results to begin this process. Expand as necessary. Use tools such as Semrush.com and Keywordspy.com.

  • Initial keyword nomination. Development of a prioritized list of targeted search terms related to your customer base and market segment. Begin with this: What would you type into a search engine to find your business website or page? Then, ask your customers!
Step 2: Keyword Research and Development
  • Keyword analysis. From nomination, further identify a targeted list of keywords and phrases. Review competitive lists and other pertinent industry sources. Use your preliminary list to determine an indicative number of recent search engine queries and how many websites are competing for each keyword. Prioritize keywords and phrases, plurals, singulars and misspellings. (If search users commonly misspell a keyword, you should identify and use it). Please note that Google will try to correct the term when searching, so use this with care.

  • Baseline ranking assessment. You need to understand where you are now in order to accurately assess your future rankings. Keep a simple Excel sheet to start the process. Check weekly to begin. As you get more comfortable, check every 30 to 45 days. You should see improvements in website traffic, a key indicator of progress for your keywords. Some optimizers will say that rankings are dead. Yes, traffic and conversions are more important, but we use rankings as an indicator.
  • Goals and Objectives. Clearly define your objectives in advance so you can truly measure your ROI from any programs you implement. Start simple, but don’t skip this step. Example: You may decide to increase website traffic from a current baseline of 100 visitors a day to 200 visitors over the next 30 days. Or you may want to improve your current conversion rate of one percent to two in a specified period. You may begin with top-level, aggregate numbers, but you must drill down into specific pages that can improve products, services, and business sales.
Step 3: Content Optimization and Submission
  • Create page titles. Keyword-based titles help establish page theme and direction for your keywords.

  • Create meta tags. Meta description tags can influence click-throughs but aren't directly used for rankings. (Google doesn't use the keywords tag anymore.)

  • Place strategic search phrases on pages. Integrate selected keywords into your website source code and existing content on designated pages. Make sure to apply a suggested guideline of one to three keywords/phrases per content page and add more pages to complete the list. Ensure that related words are used as a natural inclusion of your keywords. It helps the search engines quickly determine what the page is about. A natural approach to this works best. In the past, 100 to 300 words on a page was recommended. Many tests show that pages with 800 to 2,000 words can outperform shorter ones. In the end, the users, the marketplace, content and links will determine the popularity and ranking numbers.

  • Develop new sitemaps for Google and Bing. Make it easier for search engines to index your website. Create both XML and HTML versions. An HTML version is the first step. XML sitemaps can easily be submitted via Google and Bing webmaster tools.

  • Submit website to directories (limited use). Professional search marketers don’t submit the URL to the major search engines, but it’s possible to do so. A better and faster way is to get links back to your site naturally. Links get your site indexed by the search engines. However, you should submit your URL to directories such as Yahoo! (paid), Business.com (paid) and DMOZ (free). Some may choose to include AdSense (google.com/adsense) scripts on a new site to get their Google Media bot to visit. It will likely get your pages indexed quickly.
Step 4: Continuous Testing and Measuring
  • Test and measure. Analyze search engine rankings and web traffic to determine the effectiveness of the programs you’ve implemented, including assessment of individual keyword performance. Test the results of changes, and keep changes tracked in an Excel spreadsheet, or whatever you're comfortable with.

  • Maintenance. Ongoing addition and modification of keywords and website content are necessary to continually improve search engine rankings so growth doesn’t stall or decline from neglect. You also want to review your link strategy and ensure that your inbound and outbound links are relevant to your business. A blog can provide you the necessary structure and ease of content addition that you need. Your hosting company can typically help you with the setup/installation of a blog.

How can I Increase Your Organic Click-through-rate

If you live a website, you would need to rank high on google search which means high click-through-rate.

Your ranking on search engines is partially based on how prevalent your website is and its reception is relaxed by page views. The more clicks your page gets, the higher the CTR, then the more valuable search engines deems it to be. So, your page will obviously rank higher.

            Higher CTR = Better SEO

What then is click-through-rate (CTR)?
Click-through-rate is the rate at which users searching online clicks on your website and is considered as

     Ad Clicks ÷ Ad Impression = Click-through-rate

What this means is to attract clicks, you'll need to pull out all your "megaphones" in actions This guide will walk you through steps to increase click-through-rate that would bring free organic search traffic to your site.

Let's kick start.

If you're looking for a reputable SEO Consultant in India, then avoiding these 7 common scams will take you on your first steps to making educated decisions.

1. Write Real and Engaging Meta Description

In the search engine result page (SERP), meta description occupies 70 - 80% of search entry

They describe what your website is all about in a very short form

Writing an operative and engaging description increases your click-through-rate in summary while creating your title and meta description tag, be sure not to be in a haste in writing something.

Rather, research on the type of keywords to use that people are essentially searching for then create an attractive meta description with such keywords.

2. Create Good Website Design and Templates

Let's look at this situation for better understanding; You walk into a store that sells shoes; you were shocked by the beauty of the store. The walls are precisely painted and some beautiful artworks are done on the walls.

There's good lightening that accompaniments the designs, you'll notice you would feel relaxed already and you would be willing to buy some shoes from the stores.

This also applies to your website. Good website design increases click-through-rate, as users would feel more relaxed to know more about your business and hopefully buy from you.

Things to consider:

Check to see if you are using an old-fashioned website design.

Create something that would accompaniment your business objective.

Consult a website design company to help you out with a striking website.

Don't overdo it, create approximately classic & stunning.

3. Good Website Navigation System

You feel relaxed already in the store, now you walking around to see the kind of shoes they have. You notice every kind of shoes has its own groups and sections where they are kept, which is even much calmer for you to select your choice without the pressure of finding it.

That is Good Navigation. Your website navigation must be organized and straight. As this would help your audience navigate easily.

This increase click-through-rate and most times lead to conversion (sales) or whatever objective your website aim to reach.

4. Create High Quality Expressive Content
Content is key, even the you're a blogger, a small local business or a national eCommerce company. Aim to be regarded as an expert on the topics you write about and the products or services that you offer.

Fill your website pages and post with interesting descriptive, unique and helpful content. Doing this regularly will position you to improve your organic click-through-rates (CTR) and google search engine ranking.

5. Use Direct and Indirect Ranking Factors
Direct ranking factors are factors like: Backlinks (links from other website to your site), Keyword density (no of keywords that you are writing about within the page, post, title, URL, headers and body copy), Page load time.

Indirect ranking factors are things that direct traffic to your website, such as Facebook share, Retweets, Pinterest, pins and Celebrity commendation.

Even though these aren't directly factored into Google's search algorithms, increased traffic can impression your search engine direct ranking factors and increase click-through-rate from search engine page.

6. Implement Structured Data
Structured data also known as schema markup is what helps search engines return more informative results for users.

Here's an example of a local business that has markup on its event schedule page. The SERP entry looks like this

The schema markup told the SERP to display a schedule of imminent hotel event, which is remarkably helpful for your users.

This kind of information helps your user (audience) better understand what your website is all about and it then increases click-through-rates.

Let's take a look at another example. Search "2019 movies" and you'll be shown carousel of what Google deems best 2019 movie.

Click on a movie like I did for "Gully Boys" and you would get an info-box with showtimes mostly cinema outlets in your country.

Social media site is also included. Sites like Twitter and Facebook and reference sites like Wikipedia and IMDB have long used schema markup.

All these categories of informative results are what helps and increase your click-through-rate.

7. Localize Your Content

Over the past 6 years, Google has been instable to mobile.

This is because mobile searches have steadily increased since 2011, overtaking desktop performed method of search.

If you want to increase click-through-rate, localizing your content is the way to do it.

For example

A customer searching for Sketch Artist in India search "Portrait Artist" or " Portrait Artist India".
You want to cover both bases and more like it. As this would momentously increase your CTR and conversion.

The HTTP Status Codes Cheat Sheet Every Marketer Needs

http status codes cheat sheet for marketers

An HTTP status codes cheat sheet allows you to quickly reference codes, understand what is happening on the backend of a website, determine what errors need to be fixed, and identify ways to optimize the site for improved SEO.
To help you quickly reference the most important HTTP status codes, we created an HTTP error codes PDF for you to download. We also created a guide to supplement the HTTP status codes cheat sheet and help you identify what each HTTP status code means and which we think are most relevant to SEO.

What Are HTTP Status Codes?

HTTP or Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the standard protocol that defines how messages are formatted and sent across the web. HTTP status codes are sets of numbers that explain what is happening during the transfer process between the client (or the browser) and the server.
The codes are sometimes referred to as browser error codes or internet error codes when they indicate that a website won’t load properly.
You don’t need to know every HTTP status code, but there are important HTTP status codes you must be familiar with to avoid SEO problems. A few of the most common codes are:
  • HTTP status code 404: when a server cannot locate a resource or URL
  • HTTP status code 400: when a server cannot process a request due to invalid syntax
  • HTTP status code 500: when a server can’t fulfill a request and doesn’t have information on the specific problem
Our HTTP status codes cheat sheet lists more than 60 codes, and our guide explains the codes we feel are most relevant to SEO and the status of a website.

Understanding HTTP Status Organization

The value for each HTTP status code is not random. The first number in each code helps categorize the code into a specific situation or problem.
  • 1xx Status Codes: Information Request
  • 2xx Status Codes: Success
  • 3xx Status Codes: Redirection
  • 4xx Status Codes: Client Error
  • 5xx Status Codes: Server Error
Knowing the structure of HTTP status codes helps you quickly understand its general nature. By looking at the first number, you can get an idea about what the code implies. But to help you fully understand each code and the exact situation, we’ve compiled this HTTP status codes cheat sheet.

HTTP Status Codes Cheat Sheet

1xx Status Codes: Information Request

1xx HTTP status codes indicate that a server is processing information and hasn’t fully completed the request yet. Most 1xx status codes are not directly relevant to SEO situations.
  • 100 – Continue: The client request is good and processing.
  • 101 – Switching Protocol: The client requested to change the type of protocol, and the server agreed.
  • 102 – Processing: Processing is taking a longer time than normal.

2xx Status Codes: Success

2xx HTTP status codes show that a request has been completed and the transfer happened as planned. 2xx status codes aren’t incredibly relevant to SEO other than showing that things are working as they should.
  • 200 – OK: The exchange between the client and the server is complete. Everything is set up properly and nothing should negatively impact SEO.
  • 201 – Created: The client created something (such as a new page) successfully on the server.
  • 202 – Accepted: The client requested to create something on the server. It was accepted, but it has not been completed.
  • 203 – Non-Authoritative Information: Information was transmitted, but it was not taken from the primary source.
  • 204 – No Content: The request was received, but there was no data sent to the client.
  • 205 – Reset Content: Similar to 204, the request was received and there was no data sent to the client, but the response also includes a request to update the content.
  • 206 – Partial Content: Only a portion of the header content was sent to the client.
  • 207 – Multi-Status: The server passed the results of several independent operations at once, which are placed in the body of the message as an XML document.

3xx Status Codes: Redirection

3xx HTTP status codes indicate that the client has requested information that is no longer at the provided address. These are often referred to as redirect codes and they are very relevant to marketers because they impact visitor experience and SEO performance.
For example, if a visitor requests content that has moved, sending them to a 404-page is a bad experience. Redirection allows you to send visitors to relevant content that actually exists. Further, it helps search engines understand what content is available on your site and communicates how you want them to crawl and index it. Both of these variables impact your long-term SEO results.

3xx Status Codes Relevant to SEO

  • 301 – Moved Permanently: The request for a resource (or URL) is permanently directed to another resource. You can set up a 301 redirect for a page that is no longer available. This directs the client to another live page rather than an error page, and it also lets search engines know they need to update their index for the page.
  • 302 – Found: This is similar to a 301, but it is a temporary redirect rather than a permanent redirect. It directs clients from the old URL to a new one, but it does not tell search engines to update the index for the page (as a 301 would).
  • 307 – Temporary Redirect: A 307 is more specific than a 302 redirect. The server doesn’t see the request and instead, the browser implements the redirect on its own. It is often used on websites that are served on HTTPS when they are on the HSTS preload list.

Other Important 3xx Status Codes

  • 300 – Multiple Choices: Shows that a resource has been moved and provides a list of available alternatives.
  • 303 – See Other: The requested resource is available on a URL that is different from the one requested.
  • 304 – Not Modified: Client only requests the resource if it hasn’t been changed since the last document cache.
  • 305 – Use Proxy: Access is only possible through the proxy specified in the response.

4xx Status Codes: Client Error

4xx HTTP status codes indicate that a problem has occurred on the client side. A “client” is the browser used to access a website. 4xx status errors show that there is a problem with the browser receiving information from the server.
These codes are generally undesirable for SEO because pages that are not found create a bad experience for visitors. In addition, 404 errors mean there are pages on your site that aren’t driving traffic or generating SEO results.

4xx Status Codes Relevant to SEO

  • 404 – Not Found: The resource or URL no longer exists, and the server cannot return any information. Having 404 errors on a website can negatively impact both SEO and user experience. All 404 pages should use a 301 redirect to send requests for a nonexistent page to a live page.
  • 410 – Gone: The resource or URL no longer exists, and it was intentionally deleted and not redirected. A 410 tells search engines that the page should be removed from the index rather than redirected to another URL.

Other Important 4xx Status Codes

  • 400 – Bad Request: A syntax error is preventing the request from going through.
  • 401 – Unauthorized: Authorization is required to access the requested resource.
  • 403 – Forbidden: The user is trying to access a resource they can’t have access to.
  • 408 – Request Timeout: The transmission timeout by the relay server from the client has expired.
  • 410 – Gone: A resource was previously located on the URL, but it is now gone or unavailable.
  • 429 – Too Many Requests: Client is trying to send too many requests in a short amount of time.

Other 4xx Status Codes

  • 402 – Payment Required
  • 405 – Method Not Allowed
  • 406 – Not Acceptable
  • 407 – Proxy Authentication Required
  • 409 – Conflict
  • 411 – Length Required
  • 412 – Precondition Failed
  • 413 – Request Entity Too Large
  • 414 – Request-URL Too Long
  • 415 – Unsupported Media-Type
  • 416 – Requested Range Not Satisfiable
  • 417 – Expectation Failed
  • 422 – Unprocessable Entity
  • 423 – Locked
  • 424 – Failed Dependency
  • 425 – Unordered Collection
  • 426 – Upgrade Required
  • 428 – Precondition Required
  • 431 – Request Header Fields Too Large
  • 444 – No Response
  • 449 – Retry With (Microsoft)
  • 450 – Blocked by Windows Parental Controls (Microsoft)
  • 451 – Unavailable for Legal Reasons

5xx Status Codes: Server Error

5xx HTTP status codes indicate that something is wrong on the server side of things. The client made a good request, but the server is unable to complete the transfer. When a server produces 5xx errors, it can have a negative impact on SEO (as it may tell search engines to deindex a page), so it’s important to resolve these issues quickly.

5xx Status Codes Relevant to SEO

  • 503 – Service Unavailable: There is a temporary technical issue preventing the server from processing the request. The server tells search engines that there is a deliberate halt in processing. The search engine will not change indexing status the way it would when reading other 5xx errors. If the 503 error persists for a prolonged period, search engines may start to interpret it as a permanent error and eventually de-index the page.

Other Important 5xx Status Codes

  • 500 – Internal Server Error: An error that does not match other class errors.
  • 501 – Not Implemented: The server doesn’t understand or cannot support the request.
